You do not need to be an expert to enjoy garba. A few basic steps will get you dancing in the circle with confidence.

The basic two-clap (do taali)

The foundation of garba: step to the side, clap, step back, clap. Once the rhythm feels natural, everything else builds on it. Keep your movements relaxed and follow the circle.

The three-clap (tran taali)

A slightly faster variation with three claps in the sequence. It is common in many Ahmedabad garba circles once the tempo picks up.

Dodhiya

Danced with dandiya sticks in pairs, striking your partner's sticks in time with the beat. Start slow and speed up as you get comfortable.

Just join in

The best way to learn is on the floor. Follow the person in front of you, keep the rhythm, and you will pick it up within minutes. Garba is about joy, not perfection.
